If I saw Lachlan written, I'd never assume in a million years "woman." For that reason, if you are completely sold by using that name for your daughter, I would personally use the Lachlyn spelling to at least distinguish it a little as possible female. Lachlyn or Lachlynn other similar Laken/Lakyn or Lakelyn I agree, a -y- spelling will help to point out "feminine" to most English speakers (Americans). I think if you want to change it for that reason, and exactly what spelling works best, it largely depends on how you want it to be pronounced and why you chose it. If you are appointing a person called Lachlan, you may want to keep the spelling as similar as possible, which would suggest keeping it as-is or using Lachlyn. If you chose the sound-based name mainly, I think you can reasonably choose what the spelling looks like to you the most beautiful and seems more likely to reach the pronunciation you want. I guess you want the first syllable to sound something like the English word "lock", so Lochlyn or Locklyn or even something like Loclyn or Lauklynn seem reasonable (with various aesthetic and handicapped accessories). If you are partially attracted to the name because it is Gaelic / Scots, I would maintain the -ch-; however, as it originally meant something as "person of the earth of the lochs" and has variant spellings beginning Lauch (Scottish) and Loch (Irish) I think you could reasonably alter the first vowel to either - or-o-au- Lauchlyn (not looking less aesthetic) It would probably be very likely to take a girl with this, though. Lochlyn - I think the "o" is not traditional enough to give me a break from the get-go, and the "y" reads feminine in my eyes. I like this better for you. Lachlyn - I'm more familiar with Lachlan's spelling (ymmv), so if you want to keep it as traditional as possible, I think Lachlyn is closer to that. Lachlan and Lochlan - all men for me, so I think these would be the least desirable for their purposes. I agree with all this. For your situation I would go with Lochlyn with Lachlyn as a second option if you really hate the look of the spelling 'or'. I agree with the previous posters, Lachlyn helps feminize the name. I prefer it with "a" instead of "o" because it's more traditional, and as you said, I'm not usually a fan of alternate spellings. I've known enough guys with names like Huntyr, Kaydyn, Austyn, and Eryc* that the Y really doesn't indicate much of anything.
