I put it out of my mind until my cycle tracking app alerted me that my period was a few days late, at which point I threw my three children in our minivan and ran to the store for a pregnancy test. Back home, as my boy knocked incessantly at the bathroom door, I looked at how a second weak line appeared. This can't be happening, I thought. My husband had spent three years before. My blood test, he explained, did not even show a hint of the hCG hormone, which means I was not pregnant, but I had never been pregnant. It seemed that the test I had taken at home had produced a false positive, and my symptoms — the PMS, the bad cramp, the delay — despite being unusual to me, were simply part of my monthly period. How do pregnancy tests work at home by indicating whether hCG (human choraline agonadotropine) is present in your urine, says Mary Coll-Black, an OB/GYN at the Healthcare of San Jose in Hamilton, Ont. The presence of hCG confirms a pregnancy, and the lack of it suggests that the individual is not pregnant.
