false positive while breastfeeding

This is all you need to know about why that second line might appear when you're not pregnant. For 4 December 2020 Photo: iStock I am not a stranger to premenstrual symptoms, but a few months ago, I experienced a couple that was new to me: My back and my lower back were hurt. I put it out of my mind until my cycle tracking app alerted me that my period was a few days late, at which point I threw my three children in our minivan and ran to the store for a pregnancy test. Back home, as my boy knocked incessantly at the bathroom door, I looked at how a second weak line appeared. This can't be happening, I thought. My husband had spent three years before. Over the next few days, the shock settled and became emotion. Then, almost a week later, I started to twist and bleed. My doctor asked me to go to the hospital. Hours after waiting at the ER, a mandatory mask that covers my fear and concern, the doctor finally entered my room. "I'm sorry to tell you you're not pregnant," he said. My blood test, he explained, did not even show a hint of the hCG hormone, which means I was not pregnant, but I had never been pregnant. It seemed that the test I had taken at home had produced a false positive, and my symptoms — the PMS, the bad cramp, the delay — despite being unusual to me, were simply part of my monthly period. How do pregnancy tests work at home by indicating whether hCG (human choraline agonadotropine) is present in your urine, says Mary Coll-Black, an OB/GYN at the Healthcare of San Jose in Hamilton, Ont. The presence of hCG confirms a pregnancy, and the lack of it suggests that the individual is not pregnant. If, like me, you have a positive test but you're not pregnant, then you have hCG in your body for another reason or something went wrong with the test. Why did the test find that hCGIt is quite rare to be detectable in your urine or blood if you are not pregnant, but there is a list of reasons why it might happen: if you have recently given birth, had an abortion or experienced a pregnancy loss, or had fertility treatments where hCG was injected. It usually takes weeks when HCG completely abandons its system, says Yolanda Kirkham, an OB/GYN at Unity Health University Hospital and Women's College in Toronto. There are also some medicines that could create a false positive, he says, like aspirin, anti-learning carbamazepine and methadone. There are even some medical publications that suggest that women could end up with a false positive if they test immediately after having sex, says Kirkham, because there may be a number of hCG in semen. Test Problems A false positive may occur if you have not correctly followed the instructions in the pregnancy test. For example, it is intended to check the test results in a few minutes, while the urine is still wet, because as dry, a line of evaporation may appear as a second weak line. (You can see this reference in online mom chats as a "jump line.") A expired test also has the potential to get rid of the results; a cheap test, on the other hand, no. Kirkham confirms that price tests are no more accurate than . Even a cheap pregnancy test from a dollar store will not increase your chances of a false positive. How to configure it To get to the bottom of a positive fake pregnancy test, your doctor may ask questions and review your story. In my case, there was no reason why HCG should have been present, a follow-up blood test showed no HCG, and I'm sure I've used my pregnancy test properly. My husband was subjected to a semen analysis to ensure that his vasectomy had been effective (it was). The most likely scenario, said both ER doc and my family doc, is that I had a true, inexplicable false positive, which, by the way, almost never happens. "A positive pregnancy test that turns out to be false is extremely rare," says Coll-Black. "It's not something we've met often." I'll never know what that second line was about in my test. What I do know is that I really mixed up emotionally. Fortunately, most women will never go through what I did, as home pregnancy tests, Kirkham says, are 99% accurate. The back side: Negative fakes If your pregnancy is in your early stages and your body has not yet produced enough hCG for the pregnancy test to detect, you could get a false negative, which means you are really pregnant even if the test says you are not. He, the greatest chance of this scenario happening. If you get a false negative but still suspects you are pregnant, repeat the test in a few days. If it is negative again, but your period has not yet arrived, book an appointment with your healthcare provider.© Copyright 2021 St. Joseph Communications.
