Heart/Lung The aorta is the main artery that carries blood from the heart to all parts of the body except the lungs. Pulmonary artery is one of the two arteries that carry blood from the heart to the lungs. The vena cava is one of the two large veins that return blood to the right atrium of the heart. The left atrium is the upper left heart chamber that receives blood from the lung veins. The right atrium is the upper right chamber of the heart that receives blood from another part of the body and pumps it into a ventricle. Septo is the muscle wall that divides the heart into cameras. The left ventricle is the largest and most muscular heart chamber that pumps oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the rest of the body. The right ventricle is the right-side chamber of the heart that receives blood from the right atrium and pumps it to the arteries. Also called the trachea, the trachea is the tube that connects the mouth and nose with the lungs. The primary bronchus transports air to and from the lungs. The right lung is larger than the left and contains the upper, medium and lower lobes. The left lung contains two lobes, the upper and lower lobe. Alveoli are small airbags located in the lungs. Functions of the Heart/Lung The heart is a strong and muscular organ, in the form of cone, which is about the size of a fist. Blood is pumped throughout the body and is behind the breastbone between the lungs. Deoxigenated blood flows from the heart to the lungs where it leaves the waste and oxygenates freshly. From there, the blood returns to the heart and is pumped to the rest of the body. Heart failure is the inability of the heart to pump enough blood to maintain normal body requirements. Birth defects or any condition that damages or overloads the heart muscle can cause it. Treatment depends on the cause of heart failure and the age and condition of the patient. The lungs are a couple of highly elastic and spongy organs in the chest. They are the main organs involved in breathing. They take air from the atmosphere and provide a place for oxygen to enter the blood and for the carbon dioxide to leave the blood. The lungs are divided into lobes, with three to the right and two to the left. Heart transplant / lung Procedures Heart/pulmon transplants usually involve the transplant of two lungs with the heart. Very few heart/pulmon transplants have been performed using only one lung. Your heart may affect your breathing The heart and lungs work together to make sure the body has the oxygen-rich blood it needs to work properly. The lung loop The right side of the heart collects the blood of the oxygen body and moves it to the lungs to clean and reoxigenate. The systemic loop Once the blood is re-oxigenated, the left side of the heart moves the blood all over the body so that each part receives the oxygen it needs.
