Health care professionals Clear pregnancy tests Clearblue pregnancy tests offer a range of , all of which detect the clinically proven urinary marker of pregnancy – human choral gonadotrophin (hCG) to provide accurate and reliable results. How HCG is used to detect pregnancy HCG hormone is produced in the early stages of pregnancy. During early pregnancy, it plays a role in the survival of the body luteum1 and has a significant role in the implantation of the blastocyte and the protection of the embryo against the immune attack on the fetal/maternal limit. The hormone is initially produced by the embryo and therefore acts as a marker of its presence. 2Levels of hCG rise quickly and predictably in the early days of pregnancy3 and it usually first appears in urine 8-10 days (range 6-12 days) following the estimated day of conception when using the most sensitive laboratory assays.4 HCG levels in early pregnancy have also been found very similar among women4. This makes the hCG an ideal urinary marker to quickly and accurately evaluate whether a woman is pregnant or not. Some Clearblue pregnancy tests can be used up to 6 days before the lost period. Literature shows that the levels of hCG reach at least 50 milliliters international per milliliter (mIU/ml) the day the period of a pregnant woman is expected. 5-7 If a Clearblue pregnancy test is used on the day of the expected period, it is more than 99% accurate in pregnancy detection. 8 The high sensitivity of the Clearblue early detection pregnancy test means that pregnancy can be detected up to 6 days before the lost period.9 The chart below shows a typical increase in urinary hCG of the first pregnancy detection. Reference ranges for hCG intact urinary for each day of pregnancy *From the calculated day of ovulation (up LH +1 day) They show medium centiles, 10 and 90. Data from 109 UK volunteers Not all pregnant women who test before the day of their expected period will get a "pregnant" result. This is because urinary hCG levels may not yet be above the test threshold. All Clearblue pregnancy tests are rigorously tested using early urine samples of women whose day of luteinizing hormone surgery (LH) is known and from which it can be safely calculated on the day of the expected period7. Using these samples it is possible to evaluate the proportion of pregnant women who are expected to have sufficient levels of hCG in their urine sample to generate an 'Pregnancy' result, in every day regarding the day of the expected period. If women decide to test early with Clearblue Pregnancy Tests, the probability of detecting pregnancy before the day of the expected period is clearly shown in the product packaging. Clearblue advises any woman to try and get a "non-pregnant" result, but still suspects that the pregnancy should re-test the day she waits for her period, if she tried it early, or in another 3 days if her period is delayed. Clearblue tests are more than 99% accurate since the expected period.8 In Clearblue we believe that consumers need a result in which they can be safe and act, and therefore we provide pregnancy test products that are more than 99% accurate when detecting pregnancy from the expected period. 8Digital Results for More Precision in Consumers' Hands DIGITAL Clearblue Test with Smart Countdown contains an optical reader that provides clear digital results in words thus eliminating the human error that can occur when reading traditional line tests. 10. The Clearblue DIGITAL Intelligent count-back pregnancy test also has a unique progress indicator (smart count) to ensure the user that the test is working and indicate when they can expect the result to appear. It has the following important benefits: Visual signs give consumers confidence Early detection of hCG and can be used 6 days before the lost period (5 days before the expected period). 9 The test is more than 99% accurate since the day of the expected period.8 71% of pregnancies can be detected 6 days before the lost period (5 days before the expected period). 9 99% are required to detect pregnancy hormone and is also easy to use. We have a family doctor to answer every question you have had about the accuracy of pregnancy tests. For April 11, 2019 Photo: iStockphoto You have opened the box, pulled the plastic, stuck in the absorbent strip and impatiently expects its results. But have you ever wondered how much you can trust that little stick? With so many on the market, from luxury early detection models to cheap ones you can pick up for almost nothing at the dollar store, choosing the proper pregnancy test may feel overwhelming. Carrie Schram, a family doctor at the University of Women's Hospital and medical director of the Toronto cycle monitoring program, answers everything that has ever been asked about the accuracy of the pregnancy test, the importance of the price and how to avoid a false negative. How do pregnancy tests work? Any pregnancy test you can find, regardless of brand, style or price, will look for a simple thing: a detectable level of human choraline gonadotropin (hCG), the hormone that is produced by a newly implanted embryo. In a typical pregnancy, the hormonal level is folded every 48 to 72 hours and usually reaches a level that can be detected by a urine test about 12 to 14 days after conception (or a couple of days before your expected period). If a test is more sensitive, it can be able to detect lower levels of hCG (i.e. a previous test result). How likely is it to have a false negative? If your pregnancy is in your early stages and your body has not yet produced enough hCG for the test to detect, you could get a false negative, which means you are really pregnant, even though the test says you are not. The sooner you try, the higher the chance of this scenario happening. If you get a false negative but still suspects you are pregnant, repeat the test in a few days. If you lose your period, try again and book an appointment with your healthcare provider if you still have one. "It is reasonable to visit your doctor for a more definitive blood work and see if there is another reason why you have not had a period," says Schram. What about a false positive? .related-article-block{display:inline-block;width:300px;padding:0.5rem;margin-left:0.5rem;float:right;border:1px solid #ccc}@media (max-width: 525px){float:none;display:width; 280mgin A false positive—when a pregnancy test says you're pregnant but you're not—is much weirder, but it can happen. The Ovidrel (choriogonadotropin alfa), which is a form of the hCG hormone used in fertility treatments, can be detected by a pregnancy test up to 12 days after it is injected. If you have a tumor that secretes hCG, your pregnancy test might also show a false positive, but this is very rare. In addition, pregnancy tests may collect pregnancies that cannot be completed, such as (most often in fallopian tubes) and very early abortions. Does the day I take the test affect pregnancy test accuracy? The sooner you try, the more likely you get a fake negative. "The implantation usually occurs about nine days after ovulation, and periods usually start about 14 days after ovulation," says Schram. That means that if you test too soon before your expected period, you will get a negative test result, even if you are pregnant. From a results perspective, the best time to test is the day of your expected or later period. Do you make tests that promise to actually work? Some specialty tests are able to detect a pregnancy as early as six days before a lost period (which, FYI, is not the day your period is expected but the day after). "But the sooner you try, the less accurate the test will be because ovulation is not perfectly consistent from month to month and implantation can vary in two or three days after ovulation," he says. "I have seen patients feel very upset when an early test is negative, just to find fully appropriate HCG levels present the day their period is due." I have irregular periods. When should I test to ensure accuracy? If your and vary in more than a couple of days each month, it will be harder to know when to test for pregnancy, but the ovulation tracking results can act as a guide. If your urinary ovulation monitor, which detects luteinizing hormone (LH) — the hormone that triggers ovulation — gets a positive result, you can test the pregnancy from 10 to 14 days later. (Note: This method will not work if you tend to get positive false urinary LH readings.) The same is true if you track your temperature and observe the subtle ascent that occurs after ovulation. Just wait 10 to 14 days before taking a pregnancy test. "If you don't want to trace ovulation or find it difficult, pregnancy test once a week," says Schram. Is the price a factor when it comes to the accuracy of the pregnancy test? The accuracy of the pregnancy test is not affected by the price. If your pregnancy test says you're pregnant, I'm almost sure you are. That said, more expensive tests can be more sensitive, so they can detect lower hCG levels and provide positive test results at an earlier date than cheaper testing. "That's why you shouldn't trust the dollar store tests to try very early," Schram says. Should I use the accuracy percentage in the package to choose my test? Any test you find in a Canadian pharmacy, grocery store or dollar store will have more than 99 percent precision if you test the day of your expected period or later. The most economical early detection tests may include a table with precision percentages for up to six days before a lost period, and you will notice that precision decreases the previous one you try to test. (For example, Clearblue's early detection pregnancy test demands more than 99 percent accuracy if you test the day of your expected period or one, two or three days before; 96 percent precision four days before; and 79 percent five days before. These numbers are comparable to the first response Early Results Pregnancy Test.) Should I rely on detectable hCG levels to choose my test? One of the most valuable pieces of information you can have is the hCG level that the test can detect. The lower the amount of hCG required, the more sensitive the test will be and the sooner you can confirm a pregnancy. Unfortunately, this information can be difficult to convey. Clearblue is transparent and publishes these levels on your website. Other brands list them in the addresses within their packages (so you won't know the detectable hCG level unless you buy a test). Other brands refuse to give this information at all. Here are the detectables found in some of the most common pregnancy tests in Canada. They are almost all the same, regardless of the price or promised "initial result". Remember, the lower the number, the more sensitive the test will be. Clear Early Detection Pregnancy Tests: 10mIU/mLClearblue Weekly Pregnancy Tests Indicator: 25mIU/mLClearblue Quick Test Pregnancy Test: 25mIU/mLLife Stepmark Pregnancy Test (Drug Buyer Mark) "For most women, it is faster to take a test of a pharmacy or dollar store," says Schram. "The first step with us is also a urine test, which tests hCG at the same concentrations as the test used at home. In addition, most offices do not offer early fantasy screening tests, so ours can lose very early pregnancies that you could collect at home. When medically indicated, we can also order serum pregnancy tests (sangre), but these may take up to 24 hours to return."3 tips to ensure that your results are as accurate as possible1. Check the expiration date: Using a expired test could result in a false negative.2. Take the test first thing in the morning: All pregnancy tests check hormone levels in the urine. Taking the test after having had a lot of water or liquids will dilute your urine, increasing the possibilities of a false negative test, especially for an early pregnancy. It is better to take the test after you have gone several hours without drinking.3. Follow the instructions: Since the instructions vary by brand, make sure you take a quick reading. For example, a package might say you should check your results within 10 minutes, so follow the suit. "Leaving the test too long can lead to a 'phant line', which appears when other substances in your urine deposit in the detection line while the urine evaporates," says Schram. The false line will affect the accuracy of your reading. The escape? Pregnancy test accuracy is high, and home tests, regardless of style or price, are excellent for detection when there is enough hCG in the urine, usually 12 to 14 days after conception. If your test result is positive, you are almost . But if your test result is negative, pregnancy may be too early to be detected. Try again if you lose your period.
